Alicia's Lung Transplant Process

Alicia Lang, graduate of Lakota West High School, has been fighting the lung disease cystic fibrosis since she was 5 years old. From the age of 14, Alicia has been going into Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center every six to eight weeks for a fourteen-day treatment of lung clearance and intravenous antibiotics to help break down the mucus. Her daily home life includes taking sixteen prescription pills along with four breathing treatments, and insulin administered continuously to control her diabetes. Alicia is now 18 years old and the next step in her life to fight cystic fibrosis is receiving a double-lung transplant. She will be undergoing the procedure at Loyola University Hospital in Chicago, hopefully, within the next two years.

For six to twelve weeks following the surgery, Alicia will have to be accompanied twenty-four hours a day by members of her family. She will not be able to use tap water, sit in the passenger seat of a car, or even be out in public. Her family will be living with her in Chicago during this time, resulting in a financial struggle, as the expenses are costly. Due to her need of a sterile environment, Alicia will not be able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House. Therefore, a hotel room must be converted into a "clean room" to accommodate her needs. Alicia's current insurance plan has a cap that will only cover 80% of the procedure, and excludes expenses such as food, lodging, and gas. In October 2010, a fundraising organization was created called Alicia's Lungs. The organization is planning to have twelve events before Alicia goes to Chicago for her transplant. You may donate to Alicia's Lungs at any Fifth Third Bank location in the U.S.  Alicia's Lungs asks that you please make a contribution, no matter the amount; anything is extremely helpful towards her goal of approximately $250,000.

The Superior Automotive Group of the Cincinnati, OH area is making it even easier to help Alicia. All you have to do is join Superior's Facebook pages and "Like" them and for every new fan they gain they will donate $5 per fan to help Alicia raise money for her transplant.
